Comfort zone – get out of it regularly.
Panic zone – stay away from it.
Growing edge – stay here.
Balance it with support.Regularly check for progress.
Trust. Trust the process, but also trust yourself. Learn to distinguish between your ego and your body compass. Your ego will push for its own agenda.
Let’s unpack it.
I’m on the couch watching people dance on the screen. I’m in awe. I’m inspired. I imagine myself one day doing the same beautiful dance. And I keep watching and dreaming… but I never move from the couch. Have you ever done that? Please tell me I’m not the only one!
Yes, lying on the couch is never going to make me a great dancer. But getting off the couch, signing up for a class, being awkward on the dance floor, failing, looking and feeling like an idiot again and again—then eventually not feeling like an idiot but still making mistakes, failing, and trying again and again—that will.
In this metaphor, the couch is the comfort zone.Going out onto a public dance floor or into a competition? That’s the panic zone (for me!).Taking a beginner class? That’s my growing edge.
Giving myself time to recover, feeding myself well, reminding myself that I can do it and that it’s totally normal to make mistakes—that’s support.
Checking in with myself: Have I learned some new moves? Are they getting better? That’s how I measure progress.Trying another studio might be a good idea if the first one didn’t feel like a good fit.
Detach from the results. Focus on progress. It’s important to be honest with yourself: Have you put in the effort that’s required?
And this is where you want to check whether it’s your ego talking:“They don’t know what the heck they’re doing!”vs.“I genuinely lost interest in this particular dance.”vs.“I might need support to strengthen a particular muscle group to keep progressing.”vs.“I’m not built for this.”
There are so many ways the ego can go.Some people will be under the illusion that they’re doing everything necessary. Some will push way too hard. The trick is to find the middle ground.
It’s a delicate balance—trusting your inner knowing when choosing a teacher, trusting the process, and trusting your own body the whole way.
This is why it’s a good idea to hire me as your life coach.I’m a guide for the change you want, in a way that works for you.I’m here to help you see your own inner truth—and remind you to come back to it, again and again.
Sure, you can step into the fire by yourself. But it’s a thousand times better when you go with someone who’s been there before and made it out alive.
Personal transformation can be scary as hell. But what’s the alternative?
A life shrunken to the size of your couch. And really—who the fuck wants that?
